About Aaron's career
Born and raised in Auckland, Dr. Aaron Wong attended medical school at the University of Otago and completed his ophthalmology training in Auckland, Hamilton, and Palmerston North. He currently serves as a consultant ophthalmologist at Te Whatu Ora, where he works at public clinics in Greenlane, Waitakere, and Manukau.
After completing a glaucoma fellowship at Auckland Hospital, Aaron was awarded the RANZCO New Zealand Branch Scholarship to undertake an additional glaucoma fellowship at Sydney Eye Hospital. There, he gained extensive experience in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) techniques such as iStent, Hydrus, iTrack, and Preserflo, as well as established techniques like trabeculectomy and tube shunt surgery. His special interest in glaucoma stems from a desire to provide comprehensive medical and surgical management using the latest technologies in glaucoma care. Combining his expertise in medical (eyedrop) and laser treatments for glaucoma, he aims to offer personalised care options tailored to each patient’s unique needs.
Aaron also completed a cataract fellowship at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He finds great reward in seeing patients’ vision improve post-surgery, even after performing thousands of operations. He feels privileged to provide cataract surgery customised to meet each patient’s unique visual requirements.
In addition to his clinical work, Aaron is actively involved in research. He completed a clinical research fellowship with the University of Auckland and has published numerous papers. He frequently presents at national and international ophthalmology conferences and is passionate about teaching; currently serving as the tutor specialist for Auckland ophthalmology registrars and is involved in educating optometrists and nurses.
About Aaron
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my two young children and my wife, Kate, who is a rheumatologist. We love exploring together and making the most of family time. I also enjoy running, which helps balance my passion for exploring my Chinese heritage through cooking.
I’m an avid soccer fan and enjoy playing in social soccer teams whenever I get the chance. Whether it’s watching a game or playing on the field, soccer is a great way for me to unwind and stay active.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you with your eye care needs!
